Layer Up With These Fleece Denim Jackets

Hình ảnh
Though it wasn’t the only piece recreated for the film, the couture gown features prominently in the final cut and its poster, which shows Diana crumpled on the ground, her body shrouded in layers of tulle. For Stewart, the couture reflected Diana’s privileged yet unhappy existence. “It’s heartbreaking how gorgeous it was,” she says of the look. “We went through the archives thinking, What is the dress? [And] it was so undeniably the right one. To see someone on the bathroom floor in such a dress is truly heartbreaking. You can’t imagine someone being unwell in a dress [that is] so spectacularly beautiful, unique, and one of a kind. I have such nostalgia for it. Usually, I don’t have an emotional reaction to my movie posters, but every time I see Spencer’s, it makes me want to cry.”  For Durran, helping to facilitate such powerful responses from Stewart was the costume design’s primary role.   “My work is supporting her as an actress,” she says. “Watching the final ...

But there was no Dune, just a couple more days of texting, a “Whoa, so sorry I went off the grid over the weekend,” followed by another couple of days of texting, then nothing but me habitually scrolling to see if he’d watched my Instagram Stories. I might not have been so bothered if this were an isolated incident. But the same thing happened a couple of weeks ago with a work colleague. And before him the teacher guy, the hippie guy, the guy who I already sort of knew because we met at the pub with mutual friends, but then also matched on Hinge... basically, lots of guys.In previous columns, I put this behavior down to the way men tend to gamify sex. Like once they know you would have it with them, their interest wanes because it’s like they’ve “won” the game, so what’s the point in completing it? But I’m starting to think it’s more than this. That their tendency to lose interest swells up and encompasses more of their being than I thought. I firmly believe that they’ve gained a ...

How real, fundamental, sustainable change happens is something that’s been on many minds in the past year, and Philly D.A. is a riveting docuseries that sheds light on one corner of that tumultuous process. Filmmakers Ted Passon, Yoni Brook, and Nicole Salazar follow Larry Krasner, a civil rights attorney who sued the Philadelphia Police Department 75 times throughout his career, from his long-shot election as Philadelphia district attorney in 2017 as he tries to overhaul the criminal-justice system from the inside, arguing for a kind of radical, systemic change that seems near impossible in the face of institutional inertia. It’s an ambitious, sprawling epic (set to an excellent score by electronic musician Dan Deacon) that has rightfully drawn comparisons to The Wire, not least because of its constellation of vivid, flawed, truly human characters. (Episodes four and five, centering on the impact of incarceration on the lives of individuals and their loved ones, are especially co...

Just Give In to the Exquisite Sappiness of “All Too Well”

Hình ảnh
For a brief, brief moment in time, “All Too Well,” track five on Taylor Swift’s fourth studio album Red, was an underdog. The heart-wrenching breakup ballad initially played second fiddle to radio bangers like “We Are Never Getting Back Together” and “22.” Soon enough, however, the song would be heralded as a Swiftian standout, going on to be listed as one of Rolling Stone’s best songs of all time. “All Too Well” has become a kind of autumnal anthem— and still, nearly a decade later, fans haven’t had enough.Today, Swift gave fans what they never knew they needed: An expanded, re-released Red, including “All Too Well (Taylor’s Version),” the standard, five minute long track; “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version)”; as well as her directorial debut, 15-minute long film called All Too Well. “You chose this song,” Swift told the crowd at the film’s premiere at the AMC theater on the Upper West Side. “A record label didn’t pick this song as a single, we never made a video...

Why Do Men Lose Romantic Interest So Quickly

Now onto Swift’s directorial debut: The short stars Sadie Sink, 19, as “her” and Dylan O’Brien, 30, as “him.” (Did you notice a pattern in their ages? Swift’s fans sure did.) After lingering on a quote from Pablo Neruda, “Love is so short, forgetting is so long,” we open on a beautiful autumnal road. Sink and O’Brien at the beginning of their relationship, walking into a cottage in the forest where Sink hangs up a red scarf. They montage through happy-couple activities: playing a card game, kissing in the forest, spontaneous piggy-backing. Then, part 2, titled “The First Break in the Glass.” O’Brien is hosting a dinner party where Sink is clearly uncomfortable. He drops her hand at dinner in front of his sophisticated, artsy friends. A fight ensues. Later, they break up. The film ends with a flash-forward to 13 years in the future. Sink is now Swift, reading an excerpt of her first novel All Too Well to a crowd of crying women. The camera goes outside, and we see O’Brien, wearing ...

A Closer Look at How Karrueche Tran Suited Up for the CFDA Awards

Hình ảnh
Actor Karrueche Tran has been having a busy 2021 so far. The last season of her TNT series, Claws—which follows a group of manicurists working at a Florida nail shop—airs in December, and she’s currently appearing on another BET show titled Games People Play, a drama set around exploring the highly-competitive sports world. “I’m also still busy creating new designs for my jewelry brand, Kae by Karrueche,” she tells Vogue. “And I’m acting in an independent sci-fi film coming [soon].”Tran also jetted to New York City this week to attend the CFDA Awards, held at the Pool Room and hosted by Emily Blunt. It was her first time attending the awards ceremony, but Tran felt it was especially important to highlight and uplift fashion’s design talent this year (she’s a big fashion fan herself). “It’s been a crazy year and a half, and these designers have found a way to push through while remaining creative and innovative,” Tran says.  “It’s a pleasure to see them get their roses. Events...

The Street Style Guide to Wearing Carrie Bradshaw-Worthy Tulle

Fashion, sex, drugs, drama—the life of Roy Halston Frowick had all of that, and Halston, the Netflix miniseries from executive producer Ryan Murphy, captures it. Ewan McGregor stars as Halston, an American designer as inventive and inspired as he was troubled, with Krysta Rodriguez, Rebecca Dayan, and Sietzka Rose as Liza Minnelli, Elsa Peretti, and Karen Bjornson, just some of the muses, friends, clients, and collaborators who filled out his glamorous circle. “I’ve found that Halston was so interesting because his environment was so controlled while his creativity was so chaotic,” Murphy told Vogue earlier this year, and director Daniel Minahan explores both sides of that dichotomy: the vision of slicked-back chic that emerged from his studio, as well as the personal and financial crises that led to his untimely undoing.—Marley Marius             In the inventive AMC series Kevin Can F**K Himself, Ilana Kaplan wrote in June, Schitt’s Creek star Annie...

Adele’s New Album Is Finally Out, and the Internet Is Feeling Things

Hình ảnh
We’ve been waiting on Adele’s new album for what feels (conservatively) like an eternity or two, and now the blessed day has come: 30 is finally here, and as Vogue’s Keaton Bell wrote in his review, it’s “a deeply hopeful album...that represents a dynamic leap forward for the Queen of Hearts.” There are sob-inducing bangers like “Easy on Me” and “Cry Your Heart Out”; more upbeat tunes such as “Can I Get It” and “Love Is a Game”; and even one song—“My Little Love”—that was written as a lullaby for Adele’s son. In other words, to paraphrase Saturday Night Live’s Stefon, this album has everything. (Seriously, have you heard “To Be Loved”? Tears!)Adele’s music more than stands on its own, but we’re living in 2021, baby, which means that any successful album release is judged at least in part by the amount of Twitter discourse it inspires. 30 is definitely delivering on that front, with social media users logging on to share just how emotional the album has made them (and throwing in a...

A Sprawling MoMA Show Surveys the The Wonderful World of Sophie Taeuber-Arp

Hình ảnh
In 1922, Sophie Taeuber-Arp posed what now feels like an oddly prescient question: “In our complicated times, when the struggle for existence has become so difficult, I have frequently asked myself, why conceive ornaments and color combinations when there are so many more practical and especially more necessary things to do?” Her response was, likewise, comfortingly apt: With moments of crisis, the artist argued, came the “urge to make the things we own more beautiful.”Born in Davos, Switzerland, in 1889, Taeuber-Arp was a textile artist, sculptor, dancer, painter, and marionette maker; her sprawling body of work united in a cheerily colorful abstraction. Her wonderfully varied attempts to inject even tablecloths and cabinetry with beauty and a kind of geometric whimsy constitute “Sophie Taeuber-Arp: Living Abstraction,” a sweeping survey that made stops in Basel and London before arriving at the Museum of Modern Art this month. Taken together, the exhibition’s 300-odd objects, a...

Today, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny ruled to end Britney Spears’s conservatorship, a decision that will finally set the singer on the path to freedom. Following a lengthy and tumultuous trial—as well as a series of explosive documentaries that significantly raised public awareness around the issue—the world’s attention has been turned to the final stages of Spears’s legal battle. While her fans have protested the conservatorship for many years under the hashtag #FreeBritney, the suspension of her father, Jamie Spears, from the conservatorship by Judge Penny back in September led many to anticipate the controversial 13-year arrangement could finally be coming to an end. “I haven't prayed for something more in my life,” Spears wrote in an Instagram post earlier this week that has since been deleted.“The conservatorship of the person and estate of Britney Jean Spears is no longer required,” Judge Penny said today during her ruling, adding that the arrangement ...
